In his new solo exhibition, ‘Urban Myths ll’ David Piddock revisits the theme of ancient myths staged in contemporary settings. This time, the familiar quotations of sculptural masterpieces from the previous series are joined by references to master paintings as he continues to blend past and present, fact and fiction to great effect. David has long felt that since the Avantgarde became enshrined at the heart of the contemporary art establishment there was a better chance of finding innovation and freshness within established painting traditions. These paintings pose questions about aesthetics and cast doubt on the entire basis of Modernism. They also invite the spectator to speculate about the enigmatic and unlikely juxtapositions that they present.
